The Best Rapper Alive Checklist

September 28, 2011 · Posted in lists · 424 Comments

Too many people choose to throw “The Best Rapper Alive” title on any rapper with a hot song. “The Best Rapper Alive” title is the most coveted title in Hip Hop; it is not to be thrown around. Because music is subjective to ones perspective, we have to find a way to look at it from a neutral perspective. To crown someone the best we’ll need facts. Fans lie, blogs lie, numbers don’t. A rapper must earn “The Best Rapper Alive” title by doing more than rap. “The Best Rapper Alive” shall have at least 3 albums,  must have released an album within the past 2 years, and at least 3 of his/her albums must have also debuted in the Top 10; in addition he/she must have an inarguable influence on the culture.

“The Best Rapper Alive” must have at least 3 albums, not mixtapes, albums! He/she must be battle tested, and a proven winner. Just because your favorite rapper has a hot album does not make him “The Best Rapper Alive.” Blake Griffin had a great rookie season, but would you compare him to LeBron James? Of course not. Sam Bradford also had an amazing rookie season, but no one would ever dare say he’s better than Tom Brady. You get it? No rookie deserves “The Best Rapper Alive” title. He/she must have at least 3 albums to even be mentioned in the conversation.

So your favorite rapper has more than 3 albums, but hasn’t released an album within the past 2 years. Yeah, “The Best Rapper Alive” cannot be lazy. More importantly, he/she must be relevant. Not having an album in 2 years will quickly put you at the bottom of the iTunes library. Today’s generation wants new music every month. Do you want another sports analogy? I swear music and sports are so synonymous. My San Diego-New York fam is going to hate me for this one. You wouldn’t compare LaDainian Tomlison to Chris Johnson or Adrian Peterson. Sure LT is a hall of famer. But he’s nowhere near the level he was at in 2006 when he was with the Chargers, and won the MVP by scoring 28 touchdowns with 1,815 rushing yards. Calling him the best rusher alive would be absurd. “The Best Rapper Alive” must be dropping hot music on a consistent basis. Not having an album within the past two years disqualifies you for “The Best Raper Alive” title.

In addition to putting in work at the studio on a consistent basis, “The Best Rapper Alive” shall get numbers. He/she must sell records, and must have at least 3 albums debut in the Top 10. If your favorite rapper is only selling 5,000 units in his first week, he’s probably not very good. Most of the times, if a rapper has a good album, a top 10 debut is easy to obtain. A track record is important. Therefore, I’m asking that “The Best Rapper Alive”  have at least 3 albums debut in the Top 10. Consistency over time is crucial.

But the most important accomplishment that “The Best Rapper Alive” should have is an inarguable influence over the culture. Those who make history, break norms, break records, and set trends have the right to be considered the best. When I say inarguable influence, I mean inarguable in every sense of the word. So inarguable that it’s practically a fact. If a majority of the people in the culture adapt to the “The Best Rapper Alive’s” fashion, sayings, and rapping style, he or she has an inarguable influence on the culture. I cannot imagine someone considering a rapper the best alive when he/she does not have the slightest influence on the culture.

To understand “The Best Rapper Alive” checklist you have to look at it as a whole. If you look at the list paragraph by paragraph you will end up in the middle of nowhere. Comprehend that to crown somebody the best, you need to support your argument with facts. When someone says that the job market is suffering, you look at the unemployment rate for proof, you do not go ask your friends for an opinion. You look at the facts. And for all the hipsters saying, “Quez I’m never visiting KillerHipHop again, you’re completely ignoring the underground.” Well “The Best Rapper Alive” title was created by the mainstream audience for mainstream rappers. So please click the red box with the X on your top right. Yeah on your mainstream PC. Anyways, as I previously stated, “The Best Rapper Alive” MUST meet all the requirements stated above. He/she must have 3 albums, and must have released an album withing the past two years, at least 3 of his/her albums must have also debuted in the Top 10; in addition he/she must have an inarguable influence on the culture. Next time you see a stan talking reckless in the comments, for the sake of hip hop please refer them to the Best Rapper Alive Checklist.

Do you agree with this checklist? If so, who do you think is the best rapper alive?

    khangwelojc Reply:

@juan, lyricly come on EM has that ability to say just common everyday words and make a tight trak (with a fast flow ,if you read his lyrics u would be amazed that its nothing outer this world BUT the way he says it makes the difference) cant argue that but , hovs delivery and sting is precise , i mean he has that ability to get you thinking, the metaphor behind is extreme. just listen to the both guys flow and sting wise you’ll understand , and as for wayne people please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is not the rioght tym to discuss wayne.

    missy Reply:

@juan, well maybe you coudn’t relate to Em but alot of people could. And even if you can’t you still have to admit that pure lyrically eminem is way better. multi syllabel rhyming, rhyme schems, storytelling, punchlines just everything. Besides street cred also doesn’t mean that much anymore.

Lyrically, they’re at the same level, but in different ways. Power wise, advantage to jigga. And they both have that presence, but again, Jay has that prestige to him to put em over. Not to mention, Jay is a cultural trendsetter. Who else can get a stadium of people to throw up the roc?

Kanye comes in third, Lupe fourth. And fuck wayne. He’s literally a trend, no substance.

Dont get it twisted rapping about money, drugs, and women has always been in hip hops history. For example, rakim raps about money in paid in full and thts a classic. Cypress Hill, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg rap about drugs and there considered one of the best. And LL Cool J after radio always rapped about loving women. But its todays so called “hip-hop” that they think its ok to only rap about money drugs and women.

TRUTH is there is no best rapper because it is all opinion. Rappers grew up in different places and different people will relate to them.

Lil Wayne dropped “best rapper alive ” as a step towards taking the hip hop world as his throne. It was in the time were jay z had been known as the “best” and was announcing his retirement. So lil Wayne jumped in and took the throne. Up till now is jay z trying to come back up. While this whole time lil Wayne has released 4 albums and a couple mixtapes.

the checklist describes lil wayne from beginning to end. No other artist is known to spend a complete year on tour, or spending as much time in the studio

Recovery last year, Hell The Sequel this year with Royce. All his albums are platinum, and more then 3 have gone top 10 no doubt bout it. And out of everyone he has the biggest influence over anyone, no arguing about it.

this link basically answers your question ;) 32.000.000 copies sold , who else did that? and the hype that young money has nowadays? well em did just the same with dre and 50 back in the day, add to the fact that he’s top 3 lyricist of all mainstream hiphop today, if not the best (in my opinion)

and for all the people calling lil wayne the best rapper alive, just look at his hits ‘a milli’ ‘lollipop’ whatever, then look at em’s hits and ability to tell stories, deep personal shit, funny video’s, punch lines, just playing with words and offering us artists like slaughterhouse and yelawolf…. the list goes on and on, and his influence is still alive, he creates around him by keeping to himself,

Eminem is not the best rapper alive…everytime on facebook or when people just be repeating rap lines they are always from lil wayne songs cause wayne spits crazy. Eminem is top 3 rapper but Wayne and Hov are holding the top. Lil Wayne’s last two outputs C4 and SFTW were subpar but still waynes dominance in the mixtape game and the sales of C4 and C3 prove that he is the peoples champ aswell.

eminem is the best selling music artist of the past decade, you just have to agree to that, because it’s a fact.
if you ask who’s best mainstream lyricist then it’s definitly between eminem and nas and rakim, the old jay could also compete, but if you listen to his last album and WTT you just have to admit that jay’s lyrics aren’t as thight as in ‘reasonable doubt’
distant relatives was a GREAT album but nas never breaks boundaries commercially, it didn’t even get a lot of attention and I’v seen nas & damian twice live, they’re insane

    1. EMINEM – No arguments please, He sells the best along with Wayne, he releases frequently (since his return) even the greats consider him as a rap demi-god! Many more (even those that don’t like him) rate him as the best lyricists EVER.

    2. LIL WAYNE – Not the best lyricist ever but he’s certainly the most consistent, hard working and interesting guys in the game. I have him above people that you may consider better rappers like JAY-Z, because he releases far more music ie. leaks, mixtapes, features, EPs and albums. He is far younger thus more relevant and everything he touches jumps straight into the top ten in any chart!

    3. KANYE WEST – What a genius, the only rapper perhaps, who can really make good use of the auto tune, he produces classic, yet popular beats, raps well, but it’s his humour, his relevance, his consistency even without the release of mixtapes, he does the occasional feature and always produces the goods with his many albums, he sells well also and is always a face on the charts.

    4. RICK ROSS – I know people will kill me for this, but he deserves this place for consistent work, great vision and lyrics, he’s certainly relevant and works closely with DJ KHALED, LIL WAYNE and DRAKE which always emerges as a success for everyone. Many consider him fake but it’s just a cover, a gangster alternate persona, Rozay, the Teflon Don… Why does EMINEM get away with killing hoes etc.?? It’s a joke, it’s creative, an Alter-Ego: the Slim Shady. He’s a real rapper’s rapper, even NAS, LUPE FIASCO, and I think ROYCE DA 5″9′, gave props to him for being a dope lyricist, and keeping hip-hop alive.

    5. JAY-Z – Hall of Famer yet still releases stunning music, last solo album was Blueprint 3 in 2008 and Watch the Throne collab with KANYE WEST this year, he doesn’t release mixtapes or do many features which are a let down to his relevance but his image would be cheap if he did.

    Other honourable mentions are:
    J. COLE, KENDRICK LAMAR, B.O.B, ROYCE DA 5″9′ WIZ KHALIFA, BIG SEAN, YELAWOLF and of course DRAKE, but they aren’t established enough as of yet in terms of albums released etc… ALSO notable mentions go to Tech N9ne, who is killing it independently, he always has, but never got the attention like he is now which is great….

Don’t Laugh but I’m also Very excited for the rebirth of 3 greats:

    Detox by Dr. Dre,
    Poison by Chamillionaire,
Black Magic by 50 Cent, but lately i haven’t liked his recent songs at all.

@diarmuidc37, I’ve said this before on this site on another post, but Lil wayne can’t be in the top 20, never mind the top 5. Rappers have to have at least one of the following 3, good lyrics, flow or tone. The elite rappers have 2/3 of those possibly even all 3. I.E. Notorious BIG/Pac/Hov/Em/Lupe Have all of these. How many does LIl wayne have? 0. His tone is down right awful and disgusting sound, his flow sucks, though i will admit some of his freestyles have decent flows, but nothing worth writing home about, and his lyrics are some of the worst i’ve ever seen. His 2 proteges Nicki Minaj and Drake own him on virtually every track, in terms of all 3 of these categories, and especially in terms of lyrics. He sells a lot of albums b/c of his fantastic production team and people love cheesy lyrics to rap with at clubs in the car etc, that does not quality you for best ever.

    That being said

    1) Jay -Z , no introduction or explanation needed.

    2) Lupe Fiasco – still technically IMO on his way up but has the total package

    3) Eminem – While IMO he has one flaw, that he hasn’t ever had a “complete” album, majority of his albums are Half great, half lackluster, he still without a doubt has the complete trio of talent (Flow/Tone/Lyrics).

@Joe, (excuse the many punctuation and typos, I was in a rush) I’m like an anti-hater… i dont even hate on Lil B? I wouldn’t buy his music, but I don’t bitch about how the nearest random person to me on any given day, could literally rap better than him (even his more serious albums). wayne is on that list as he matches the exact description of what @Quez stated to be the criteria forTHE BEST rapper alive which should really mean the “most relevant rapper still in the game” because i could have elaborated on how nas jay and em along with the old school kings aswell as big and makaveli, but that wouldn’t at all fit the above description so I did ok…. trust me I KNOW Wayne isn’t that great, he capitalised and peaked at a quiet time in hip hop and he has managed to stay in every1s ears since. i could go on about, how kanye weezy and 50 cent owned 03-07, and just because he isn’t putting out fine art like Nas, ye/jay and drake/j.cole, does not mean i should be anti weezy, im disciplined enough to understand that many peoplewill defend their favourite artist but i couldnt bother because If any1 wants a better version of wayne, then IMO, go to Chamillionaire.

iRead it. Then read it again. Then read it as a whole for the third time and ladies and gents it is a tie! Well almost.

I gotta say, I love hip-hop. Rap most of all. (The clothes, taggin’… Hmmm. Not that much.) And most of all I love WestCoast.

The title should be given to Ice Cube!
You people (KH included) are forgetting the WestCoast Warlord really easy. And quickly.
Granted – He don’ t bitch about money or how many hoes he fucked or what cars he drive or how much money he has or how many hoes he fucked or what cars he drive. (No, it’s not twice by mistake… Think about it.)
Every single song he drops is a treasure. And the lyrics, the lyrics! There ain’t none better than him.
HE’S REAL. HE’S RELEVANT. But the problem is, I don’t know his sales.

So the other one is without a doubt S. Carter. HOVA. Jigga. Luckiest guy on Earth (looking at you Bey! :D) Jay-Z.

The third one would be Eminem. But! He imho needs one more album! (I really don’t like him before Relapse/Recovery)

And to all who mentioned Weezy as a potentional contestant!
I even wouldn’t let Lil’ Wayne suck my dick. I bet most of y’all listen to “his” music, but not the lryics. They suck. Took me long time to realize it. It was kinda “painfull”, but it’s the truth. (Okay, not the real truth. We’re on the interner, I know…)

@thekid, I agree completely. Cole and Kendrick are my faves. I fear for hiphop after hearing Cole debut album. He’s only going to get better! XV and Los are too ill as well. What these rappers all have is lyricism, and that’s been missing for a loonng time. I believe after Cole and Kendricks collab album that hip hop will be going in the right direction. I would choose anyone of these rappers to counter against who people are saying as the best, but numbers play a huge part to many people who look at album sales more than they look at the lyrical content within the album. And I also agree, Em and Jay are the best mainstream according to this checklist.

Eminem, as of right now, he’s the best. His flow is amazing, and his lyricism is untouched. He is not afraid to battle anyone. All of his songs and albums have very good numbers. Second would be Jay-Z. 11 numbers one! Bill Russell rings. The only reason why he isn’t ranked above Em is because Em is still consistent. His style hasn’t changed much over the years, besides the whole, “Just Lose it” type. Third is ‘Ye. His word play matches that of Em and Jay. Also he’s probably the most outspoken, controversial, outgoing, and fashionista individual. He says whatever he wants, when he wants, etc. Then fourth would be Wayne. He’s hard working, but his success largely comes from his dick-riding fan base. Carter 4 was not his best album, not better than C3, and it still sold high in sales. Not because it was a good album, but because of his fans. Em, Jay, and ‘Ye produce great albums, and they still sell well. Not because of there fan base, sure that plays into it too, but because people know a good album when they hear it. That’s why you don’t hear about them selling a million a week because their fans buy the album after they had a chance to hear it. Unlike Wayne’s fans who buy it right away, not knowing whether it would be good or not. Oh and didn’t Birdman supposedly buy a shit load of albums? He denied it, but who wouldn’t deny it.

how are people saying eminem is the bestt rapper alive when he stopped making music for 4 years and lil wayne has always been relentless. he was just getting big in 05 with carter 2 then in 08 every white person on the planet knew him and even when nobody knew him he STILL made so much music. so statically lil wayne should be considered the best rapper alive eve if his lyricism says otherwise. yeah yeah i know eminem had drug issues but quite frankly thats his own fault. he put his dependency on drugs before making music the best rapper alive wouldnt do that ALSO U PPL ARE SAYING WAYNE EMINEM AND HOV BUT WHAT ABOUT KANYE ?!?!?! in my humble opinion hes best!!!!

I disagree!!! Fuck mainstream hip-hop cuz you have what J.Cole called em yesterday on 106 “Fantasy Rappers” No “fantasy rapper” should ever be allowed to even be considered for “The Best Rapper Alive” title… I mean unless of course you look at the title of a “rapper” as I do! A “rapper” is some one who raps to make words rhyme over a beat but aint talkin about shit! An ” ARTIST” is someone who can make words rhyme but does what an “ARTIST” does, and thats paint a picture with words! Someone who can tell me a “REAL LIFE STORY” that I can relate to! So with that bein said the best “RAPPER” alive would have to be Waka Flocka LMAOOOO… Because of MAINSTREAM and what these weak ass MAINSTREAM FANS wanted, rappers like him went platinum! So fuck what mainstream wants cuz they know nothing about REAL HIP-HOP!!!!! And if rookie “artist” such as J.Cole, Drake, & a slew of others can’t even be considered for the best rapper alive then your comparison of Blake Griffin to Lebron James does NO justice, cuz LEBRON HAS NO RINGS EITHER (and Imma fuckin Lebron fan)… Cam Newton said it best… “There is no HALL OF FAME LEAGUE!! Tom Brady good! Damn Good! But he still play in the same league I do!” … How you think artist like Drake & J.Cole feel, like really feel?? To live their lives on the road just like Wayne & Jay-Z do! To put they heart and soul into this music shit, just like Wayne & Jay-Z! Who are lyrically as talented as most of these rappers who have been doin it for yearssssss but to have people tell them that their in the same game as Wayne & Jay, but they can’t play on the same field. They gotta go play in the old ass little gym! (The Sideline Story!) All cuz their NEW! They aint new to hip-hop! They new to the fans of hip-hop! They didn’t get that great over night!! They been doin this!!!!… GET IT! Don’t worry you’ll thank me later for this! Shout out to REAL HIP-HOP!!!!…. P.S. Numbers do lie!!!! The fact that Waka Flocka Flame went platinum EVEN ONCE and even if he did it 2 more times in the next 2 years he will neverrrrrrrrrrr be considered as “The Best Rapper Alive” (which he should never be) shows that numbers do lie!!! I’ll tell you what don’t lie tho! THE HEART! Or the number of times you heard songs like “Tupac – Brenda’s Got a Baby” or J.Cole – Lost Ones and you cried! Or all the times you heard Drake or whatever artist you can relate to and said, “DAMN!!!! I’ve been through that shit!” Thats what don’t lie!!! REAL MUSIC!! Thanks for the #Vent

I lyrically love him but he’s only relevant now-a-days because of the money he has and the way he talks about it better then anybody else. That’s all “Watch The Throne” talks about forreal. MONEY, CARS, & CLOTHES! Materialistic things that don’t mean a damn thing to me! Those topics hinder great artist in my opinion because it dumbs down what a real artist has to say and that’s where the mainstream/industry fucks up REAL HIP-HOP!

The only rappers that actually qualify are Jay-Z, Eminem, Nas and Lil wayne. I like him alot but Em’s out of the question because he already said lil waynes was better then and him and Kanye too. So then it’d be Jay-Z, Kanye, and Wayne but i still think Kanye doesn’t have that great factor yet. Honestly i don’t agree with this checklist because the best RAPPER alive only comes down to one thing… lyricism. Jay -Z isn’t the best rapper alive but he is the most succesful and no one can take that away from him. Nas is probably one of the most influential rappers alive. Eminem is the most unique rapper alive, but when it comes down to lyricism Lil wayne holds that title, because when you think about rap wasn’t always how much albums and mixtapes you sell, songs downloaded, concerts selling out, or how much money you have it’s really the lyrics people. If you have a problem with that show me one song were metaphorically your favorite rapper estroyed the track and i bet i could find an even better one that lil wayne destroyed.

Eminem and Jay Z have been consistent for over 10 years. I’m sorry but 10 years from now, i don’t see Lil Wayne being mentioned on a list like this. He’s extremely popular and his momentum isn’t slowing down much but lyrically Eminem and Jay Z have impacted so much more. Eminem isn’t just the best selling rapper, he’s the best selling music artist of the past decade, since he debuted. He has classic albums that are certified diamond. Classic songs that have won Grammys and even an Oscar. I think Jay Z might be a little over rated but i respect what he’s done. These guys lived and produced in the era where hip hop was a way of life and poetry and emotional lyricism was standard. Then Eminem took a break because he had a drug problem. What did we hear during that 4 year break Em had you ask? Hip hop’s downfall into “spinners”, cars, bitches, drugs, dance and snap, pop lock and drop, lollipop, etc.” Then Eminem comes back and out come the J. Cole’s, Kendrick’s and other lyrical based rappers. If that’s not a sign of Eminem’s influence on real rap then idk what is. Lil Wayne is simplistic and easily quotable but his “swag” is unmatched by anyone right now. However he didn’t debut like this and i have yet to hear a single album or even song to be labeled as a “classic”. I never had a problem with Wayne cause i thought he was cool back around the Carter II age but the way he protrays himself now and the way people dick ride him so much boggles me cause they can’t see how much of a clown he is. Lil Wayne is not Hip Hop. And I understand how people are saying Eminem is Pop now but that’s just his celebrity. I think some newer cats are killing it right now but it should be no question that, going by this list, EMINEM is the “BEST RAPPER ALIVE”. He made “Stan” and now, 10 years later, it’s become a term used by many hip hop heads as a way to descibe a hardcore fan. I do love Kanye though but he’s not an M.C. and i think being a true M.C. is part of the criteria of even being considered the best rapper alive. Eminem hands down

Lemme tell you that Wayne was the best in his 2005-2009 shit but then he became a bit crappy. Eminem turned out to be shitty (Take the relapse as an example), Jay-z is the one out of the three best mc’s alive who got his shit stable so I’ll go for him. If we consider their past, I’ll go for weezy since when he was on his best it was simply unfair for the others.
Drake’s taking over nowadays IMO but he still have a long road to be crowned the best in the game.

getting pissed off with one-minded pricks saying ‘LIL WAYNE IS THE BEST!’ sure his music is good and hes just dropped an album, but read ALL of what this guy wrote.. has wayne influenced the hip-hop culture massively.. As much as a lot of you hate to hear it, you gotta look back on Jay’s career. Hes still in the studio 24/7 and recently dropped watch the throne (onviously, his music has been amazing since the black album) but its been tight and hes selling loads. And Em too.. Look what he did with hip-hop. He turned it on its head, the first big white rapper, went through so much shit but kept making some of the realest music in rap.

  83. Tito on September 28th, 2011 11:16 pm

I think that any hiphop fan that can remain objective while discussing this topic can agree that the top 4 rappers today are Jay-Z, Kanye West, Eminem and Lil Wayne (not in any kind of order).

I think that technically Eminem is the best rapper alive. If you look at the facts; no rapper (mainstream rappers only) can freestyle like him, not many comes near his level when it comes down to lyrics, sales or flows. Hova has won more awards, but that it is understandable since Jigga has released a couple of more albums than Em. But the white kid does not make as many solid records as Kanye West, I think we could agree on the fact that MDTBF is a better album than Recovery, and WTT is way better than Hell: The Sequel.

Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers ever, no doubt. But I don’t think that he kills all the competition anymore. For example, Jay was not better than Mr. West on WTT and I think that their album is as great as it is because of the kid brother. Don’t get me wrong, Jay was amazing on most of the songs on it, if not all, but a lot of people overlook the work that Kanye is doing when he is not rapping. He made or helped make 9 out of the 16 tracks on the album. Now ask yourselves; how would WTT sould like without Kanye?

Back in 2008 young Carter made everything he touched turn into gold. Everytime he dropped a verse, it was a hearse. Remember his verse on David Banners 9mm? Or Respect my Conglomerate? Or the verses on Carter III? But than something happened. Suddenly Drake killed him on his own track, Right Above It. He made a song called “Blunt Blowin” when he is not smoking weed. But the worst thing about Wayne is that he is not developing his rapping style. It sounds the same all the time and he is not changing topics either. And he said it himself, qoute: “I ain’t saying I’m the best no more, because these niggas is too good these days”.

One thing I admire about Mr. Best, oh pardon me, Mr. West is that he is changing lanes all the time. He is always trying to do something different. Sure, from a hip hop perspective he messed it up back in 2008 but then he came back in 2010 and released one of the greatest albums hip hop was ever seen. As if that was not enough, he stepped his game up behind the mic as well. Now a days it is not unusual for Kanye to kill Jay on Hovas own track; Run This Town. The kid brother has had the album of the year two years in a row. And you know how rappers release a new song every week to get their hype up? Well, G.O.O.D. Fridays started that. As if that was not enought, no other rapper has recivied as many good album reviews as Kanye Omari.

At last, for all of you saying that Jigga’s and/or Eminem’s first albums are better than all of Kanye’s or Wayne’s; sure, Em and/or Hova were perhaps better… 10 years ago. For me Kanye is the best as an artist because he does more for the growth of hip hop than Hova, Em and Wayne.

P.S. Pardon my grammar, I’m a 17 year old kid from Europe.

That is your opinion, but let’s look at the facts. Hell: The Sequel hasn’t went platinum yet, even though it came out 2 months before WTT. And If you have not heard WTT went platinum not so long ago. Besides, Hell: The Sequel got 3 stars on its Rolling Stone review, meanwhile WTT got 3,5 stars.

I’m not saying that Hell: The Sequel is a bad album, because it’s not. But there is nothing groundbreaking about it, it’s just plain old hardcore hiphop mixed with midwest hiphop. WTT is something new, even if it reminds me a little of MDBTF. One example is the track “Murder to exellence” where Jay and Ye went from talking about black murder to black exellence, for me the transition is amazing. Not just the two topics but also the way it is two songs made into one outstanding record.

    [Reply]

    alex Reply:

@Tito, There is no fact behind a critic rating an album because that too is just an opinion. in my opinion Kanye and Jay are great solo artists but that album was trash. as for hell the sequel it didnt sell as much because it wasnt as advertised and it was with Royce who many so called rap fans dont know about. While WTT featured 2 of the more popular rappers in the game

    Tito Reply:

    @Tito,
I was referring to the sales numbers when I said facts, perhaps I wasn’t clear on that point.

Kanye and Jay didn’t promote their album what so ever, meanwhile Em and Royce did.

It will be interesting to see which album will win the “Best Rap Album” at the grammys, if Hell: The Sequel is nominated that is.

Kanye has to be in the top 3…
the guy has changed the way people use and bend music to their liking as well as it to introduce something new on more than one occasion…his use of soul sampling, auto tune, and then electronic beats…thats three albums with three completely unique sounds…not only does he variate his music to popular appeal he also has the lyrics as well as the emotion of music that others lack cause the talk about the same ol shit all the time. finallyyyy…Kanye also got the production on lock which a lot of the mentioned people don’t even do. thats double trouble and its shown by the numbers he’s always put up along with all the popular culture things he’s said….GW bush, then taylor swift, then pastelle, his mom dying, him doing all these things (albeit some might be negative) but they changed the game and the way people view music. you have to admit he’s one of the best

    5. Lil Wayne – I hate him now, he pretty much makes garbage and then multiplies it to make an album. But you gotta respect his career. Used to be one my fave rappers when he cared about quality more than money.

The new guys need some time but I guarantee you J. Cole cracks this list in 10 years…hes bringing old respectable hip-hop back with a new style.

No hate on eminem, personally I just think you can tell Jay-Z has done more/had more success than eminem (whos had a lot in his own right also). Kanye > Hov for me but thats personal choice, if you look at it objectively then Kanye hasnt had the success Hov has had.

its EASYILY wayne… the fuck. dude sold a milli in the first week once, two times if you count the world wide sales but c3 did like 1.1 somethin and c4 did 960 k. dont see wtt (which is jayz AND kanye……) with over 500 k in a first week. takes a month to get a milli n wayne got it in a week. waynes been in the game since he was TWELVE YEARS OLD. he broke a guiness book world record for having 16 songs in the top 100 i think? either 16 or 17 something like that. wayne’s style n flow has been used by so many people… he went to jail, and still made like 5 mill. no ones doing that. he put on DRAKE. i mean jayz got cole but honestly drake is a whole level above cole. cole’s new album is nice as fuck but it can’t fuck with drake…. at all. drake can sing AND rap. no one’s doing that. honestly drake will be the best when its all said n done but right now wayne is on top. eminem’s album, not recovery but relapse was ASS. jayz’s last solo album was blueprint 3. which wasn’t nearly as good as the carter 3. but he hasn’t had a solo album since! comparing wayne n game??? is just nonsence…. wayne literally SHITS on the game. wayne is on top. HE’S EVEN THE MOTHER FUCKING PICTURE FOR THIS DAMN ARTICLE. fuck what anyone thinks, stop being biased, lil wayne is the best rapper alive. he works EVERYDAY EVERY NIGHT ALL YEAR. no days off. easily. jayz isn’t a rapper anymore… he’s a business man with music on the side. and eminem doesn’t do shit anymore either! wayne went on tour TWICE in the past year after being released from prison and both shows were the best concerts ive ever been to. is jayz ever on tour for 6 months straight?? kanye?? eminem?? don’t worry ill wait. and last time i checked wayne and eminem sold out a concert in austrailia last month in 5 MINUTES!!!!!! on that note i think i’ve said enough. wayne. easy.

Lil Wayne never falls off. he makes music after music. People (rappers) have call him in another level. Nobody above him. dude is legit and a genious. He comes up with crazy punchlines. He is on his own level. Eminem is right behind him. So only argument u can make is Lil wayne and eminem for the top. I will still go with Weezy f Baby.

I think the biggest would be Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and (arguably Lil Wayne).

Eminem and Jay-Z because the list sounds like it was made with them in mind. Em is probably the best lyricist in Rap and makes the emotional and poignant songs that people can relate to. He’s stayed consistently popular, and consistently ahead of everybody else. The only way that I see Jay-Z ahead of Em is the amount of $$, otherwise Eminem has Jay-Z beat on every other factor. My favorite Jay-Z album was Blueprint and then disc 2 of BP2, and I didn’t like BP3 all that much….Eminem’s Recovery to me was a better album. Either way, these two have reached that level and stature in rap where to criticize them openly is blasphemy, and they can not be touched. No new artist in their right mind would insult these two. If you want to know what Eminem and Jay-Z have done for rap, Eminem arguably made rap as popular as it is today. He’s achieved more than anybody else while still alive (except people like MJ and Paul McCartney, etc). Jay-Z made an empire, and branched out into so many different things. Jay-Z evolved from a rapper to something greater, and has a respectable position in business, and became a household name for things other than just his music.

Kanye West is definitely the experimentalist of rap, he is not afraid to try anything new, and succeeds most of the time. His ego might get in the way, but tbh some of that ego is justly deserved. Didn’t he popularize or pioneer the whole soul sampling for BP? He got the choirs and epic opera and orchestral beats popularized recently. He’s ventured into fashion along with a successful rap career. Consistency wise his albums have been one of the highest reviewed albums every year they came out, something that not even Eminem and Jay-Z can claim.

Lil Wayne is immensely popular, and I think he can say he affected the game. At one point he made everybody believe success equated to a Lil Wayne guest feature. I mean come on 2006-2009 he murked everything! C3, IANAHB, and even C4 were commercial successes. C4 may have been panned, but people still bought it, and a lot of people did like it honestly. I thought it was ok.

Also, I would just like to add that Tupac and Biggie should not be considered the Greatest Rappers of All Time. As an opinion ok, but sometimes people act like they were the second coming of Jesus. Face it, many people came after them that would have probably murked them on the mic-even before. I’m pretty sure that if Tupac and Biggie hadn’t died, they wouldn’t have been remembered as much and when people like Eminem came in around 3-4 years later (IMO MMLP and TES are better than SSLP) he would’ve probably been considered GOAT over Tupac and Biggie. They would have most likely fallen off.

That said, Tupac and Biggie do deserve honorary mentions because they no doubt influenced rap greatly, and did receive acclaim. However, sales and success otherwise IDK because their death had a lot to do with their sales. Also they didn’t reach a wider audience while alive like Em or Jay did. Em and Jay made it ok to like rap….and I also find it hypocritical that people say rap is all about guns, drugs, women, and partying, when Tupac and Biggie rapped 90% about this. Everyone raps about them, in many genres other than rap. Tupac and Biggie were not rolemodels, and their music wasn’t as uplifting as many people claim it is. Neither is eminem’s or Jay’s or Kanyes or Wayne’s but I’m just saying.

@Speters13, i agree with almost all of what you said but honestly jay-z is relevant.. but not THAT relevant anymore. same goes for eminem. they never put out free music, theyre never on features, they never tour, jay-z’s last solo album was blueprint 3 and like you said it wasn’t that good.. honestly wtt was really good but kanye pulled most of the weight. cuz without his production and his rapping it would have been like blueprint 3, an average album. so other than that jay-z is kinda off the map in rap. you can’t really be the best rapper alive if you are involved in business. cuz thats not rapping….. but jay-z back in the day was FIRE i’m not gonna front at all. but for kanye, his beautiful dark twisted fantasy was good, not amazing, had no hype very underrated but still good. not a c3 or c4. to me wayne is the best cuz he goes above and beyond. working everyday, selling millions in first weeks, 2 tours in 1 year, selling out every show, and selling out a show in 5 minutes. he lost a lot of respect from his vma performance, even i lost respect for him. but he is stilll the best rapper allive in my opinion.

    Speters13 Reply:

@Ray13allday, Yeah, but I just got thinking and realized that we consider people like MJ one of the greatest of all time and alive (when he was that is)…..but he was relevant for all the wrong reasons for a good 20 years or so. He didn’t do too much touring. I think that Eminem and Jay-Z kind of get that same pass, they don’t need to be relevant every day, week, or even month. But Eminem has been doing shows internationally, and Jay-Z has a WTT tour planned with Kanye West. I agree about how Kanye did pull the weight, the whole album sounded like Kanye’s ego with Jay features (That’s not a complaint even tho it sounds like it haha I like that epic sound he does).

As for Wayne, I say he was a contender for Greatest Alive in his c3 era, at that time he was even my favorite for a good year or two. I think he needs consistency, not only saleswise but the music he releases. He does record music religiously, but if you think about it he also releases a lot of crap. Eminem, Jay-Z, and Kanye West definitely record a lot more than we just hear, but they carefully pick and choose most of what the public hears. Specifically for Eminem and Jay-Z, they are at that “legendary” status that they probably have recordings lined up for after their time. Unreleased music, and things like that. And if you think about it Eminem never really did features a whole lot, he had features when he first started out, then did them very rarely. In fact, I’m pretty confident that Eminem had many more high profile features during the last two years or so than anybody expected him to (not counting BME as features).

Tha Carter 3 sold 3.6 mil which was his best album while Eminem had 5 of his 6 albums sell more then that with 2 of them topping 10 million. Please get out of here with Lil wayne
“One thing that stuck with me is that Eminem is not to be f*cked with ever in hip-hop, ever,” Game explained in an interview. “If you notice out of everybody I take a shot at, that’s the only person that’s untouched. He’s in a bubble and you don’t even say nothing to Eminem. To anybody that ever does, God bless you,” Game said. ‘He’ll end your career.” thats what game said about eminem so for those of you saying eminem isnt the best cause he said lil wayne n kanye are better, he said that when he was at his lowest in his career and said it out of respect. Now please stop dick riding lil wayne and look at the numbers. A milli in a week dont mean shit if it doesnt keep selling

  109. Beattie on September 29th, 2011 2:03 am

Haha, this is a pointless argument. It’s all going to be relative, either way.

All in all, though. Historically, lyrically, consistently, and financially Eminem is the best rapper alive. I don’t think you can really compare Lil Wayne to him, because they’re from two different generations almost. Eminem and Jay Z are really the only two that can be compared, and even then, their style is so different, it’d only be a waste of time. Eminem could kill Jay Z on a freestyle, but Jigga could murder Eminem on a club-joint. They’re both incredibly successful, but I think even Jay would admit that Em’ tops the pops. Wayne ain’t even up with them, he’s a kid in the sand-box still. And anyone who understands the fundamentals of true hip-hop could discredit Wayne outright.

Wayne is an awesome lyricist, but he’s not been time-tested the way Em’ has. He’s not beefed with anyone so vocally that everyone knows, or brought hip-hop to a whole other level. The way all the greatest MC’s have; Outkast, Pac, Biggie, Rakim, Run DMC; they all made their mark and changed the game entirely. Wayne’s yet to do that, ’cause he’s still kicking it mainstream. He’s talented, sure, but even he knows better than to say he’s better than Em’. Just out of respect even, he understands that he’s got some time before he can even consider himself on Em’s level.

It’s like comparing Lebron James to Michael Jordan, they’re not comparable, and if they were, Lebron even with all the talent he has would have to do something incredible to even have his name spoken with the same air of emphasis as MJ’s.

When you change the game, that’s what makes you the greatest. Eminem, is not only able to kill someone’s career, he’s been able to suck and still be considered great without even saying so.

ON a serious note I wouldn’t be able to pick just one but I can produce a list and in that list I believe it consists of…
Kanye, Jay-Z, Eminem, Nas, Snoop, GAME, Common and I think those are the relevant rappers that fit the checklist in my opinion. Someone might wonder why I didn’t put LIL WAYNE and the reason for that is solely because in my opinion he has some good records where I can bop my head and actually appreciate the lyricism but most tracks I shake my head in disgrace and think to myself “what the fuck were you thinking Wayne?” So THIS IS JUST MY OPINION! People might dislike it but I don’t see a reason for them to do so. I love Hip-Hop/rap and everyone has their own opinion so if you guys don’t like my list then go FUCK YOURSELF. No disrespect though. “Push…no shots”

Soooo a recurring theme in these comments is how Wayne sold a million on CIII and almost did it again on CIV… Well, you folks fail to recall that only one(1) rapper has done it twice in history has done it twice: Eminem with MMLP AND with The Eminem Show…

Check your facts before using album sales as part of your criteria

    [Reply]

  113. DefSky on September 29th, 2011 2:28 am

    OK OK OK…. Everybody STOP… It’s a fucking jungle out there…

God damn, everybody is just giving name or list with no fact… YOU need Fact #FACT

So let’s start with who CAN make the list (meet all the requirements stated above.)

Let your opinion on the side… Fan shut the fuck out… Let the number speak:

So allegeable to the list: Bun B, Busta Rhymes, Common, Diddy, Eminem, Fabolous, Jadakiss, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, Nas, Nelly, Raekwon, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, T.I., Talib Kweli, The Game, 50 Cent.

Ok let’s be honest it’s obvious (opinion stand aside) : Bun B, Busta Rhymes, Comme, Diddy, Fabolous, Jadakiss, Lupe Fiasco, Nelly, Raekwon, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, T.I., Tali Kweli, The Game, 50 won’t sit on the throne.

Now Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Nas are left I guess Top Five RIGHT ???

So let’s look up closely to each of them:

    – Eminem:
    – 8 N. 1 Album, 4 N.1 single, 11 Grammys.
    – Signed 50 cent, D12, Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf. (Owns Shady Record)
    – Beat Maker
    – Biggest selling artist of the decade
    – Movie about is life.. Won Oscar…

    – Jay-Z:
    – Most N.1 albums by a solo artist, 1 N.1 single, 8 Grammys
    – Signed Kanye, Rihanna, J. Cole to named a few,
    – Book (best seller), Nets Owner, Béyonce husband Lol, Rocawear…
    – Def Jam, Roc-A-Fella, Roc Nation

    – Kanye West:
    – 5 No.1 Album, 2 N.1 Single, 12 Grammys
    – Signed Common, John Legend, KiD CuDi, Big Sean… ( G.O.O.D Music)
    – Designer, Controversy Master Lol,
    – Top 5 best producer
(All this in less than 7 years, don’t forget)

    – Lil Wayne:
    – 3 No. 1 Album, 1 No. 1 Single, 4 Grammys
    – Signed Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tyga… ( Young Money)
    – Last rap album to sell 1 mil in a week
    – Most US Hot 100 Hits By A Rap Artist

    – Nas:
    – 5 No. 1 Album, 0 No. 1 single, 0 Grammys
    – Did Illmatic
    – 1st to declare Hip-Hop Is Dead
    – Probably The Biggest Rapper artist that can still be consider (Underground)

So in Conclusion If you look at the fact and the number:
The (Greatest Rapper Alive) should be Etheir Eminem, Jay-Z or Kanye West
But at the end of it everbody has different opinion and that’s how it should be

    See Ya

I’ll be the first to say that IN MY OPINION, since this is completely based on a personal perspective, which makes me wonder why half of you are arguing about it, eminem is the best rapper alive. Let me explain why, and to do so il make another sports reference. When lil Wayne came into the game he wasn’t immediately good, better yet he didn’t have jaws dropping on his first album, at least not like eminem did. Being the first white rapper, facing all the negatives going against him(cause seriously eminem is like the Jackie Robinson of rap), he literally KILLED it right off the bat. Which brings me to the sports, the greatest players in every sport do not step out in the first season and realize that no one can touch them, you have to build up to prime, it’s not instantaneous. However, you cannot deny that what you do as a rookie in any game, literally DEFINES who you will be. Btw please don’t comment back saying that I’m wrong, I can respect you’re opinions, but not if you come out and say it so bluntly..

All his fans think he’s the next coming of Jesus Christ our Savior and everybody else thinks he’s an average lyricist who can’t rap a bar with out saying “mothafukka”, “bitches”, or “weezy f baby”. Gahdamn people, he aint what rap is supposed to be about. You gotta send a message through your music, Jay-Z spreads the “i grew up with nothing so now im gonna take everything attitude”, em’s got the “imma say what everybody wish they could say type attitude”, nas (can spread a message in about 2000 different ways), and even kanye has a “soulful black power message”. im sorry but the “fuck bitches, drink sizzurp, got money, im the greatest ,imma blood, im the shit type attitude” aint what this is all about.

    A – white people

B – cause he acts crazy, and do we love us some crazy.

i agree with something someone up there said, when is eminem gonna put out a “marshall” album. not a pop ( recovery) or a crazy ( all of the albums before recovery) . I want to hear him be real so bad. all i hear is screaming and lying. talking about killing women and cutting himself for attention

You guys are really serious about eminem? and the dumbest comment read was having an influence! i’m black and i speak all black people, that eminem has no influence on any black person! his songs doesn’t, he is always mad about something, how can be that rich and be mad?!

Influence? what does he do that makes people wanna do?
you wanna talk about an influence rapper, and i’m not a big fan of this rapper.
But Jay Z is the most influential rapper period. No ifs or buts. i’ma give you guys a few reasons why.
    THROW BACK JERSEY!
THEN HE GOES, OH NO WEE OFF THAT,
THROW BACK JERSEY SELLS WENT DOWN TO DRAIN

    CHAMPAGNE
    IT USED TO CRYSTAL…
THE OWNER MADE SOME RACIST COMMENTS
THAT WAS IT, HE INTRODUCE ACE OF SPADES
NOW EVER RAPPER DRINKS THAT AND WE CAN ALL SEE IN THE VIDEOS

    MAYBACH
BABY AND LIL WAYNE AND ALL OF THEM YOUNG SMALL MONEY PEOPLE HAD CARS LIKE BENTLY’S AND ALL THESE CARS WITH RIMS

JAY COMES OUT AND SAY MAYBACH IS WHAT I RIDE IN
NOW BABY HAS ONE, EVERY DAMN RAPPER HAS ONE

HE SURE KILLED AUTO TUNE, WHEN ALL YOU HEAR ON THE RADIO WAS AUTO TUNE.

BRIGHT COLORS. HE KILLED IT WHEN HE SAID ALL BLACK EVERYTHING, THAT YEAR ON THE BET AWARDS, YOU WOULD THINK IT WAS A BLACK FUNERAL CAUSE EVERY DAMN RAPPER HAD ON ALL BLACK.

INFLUENCE? EMINEM? REALLY? REALLY WEARING HOODIES AND OLD JORDANS. COME ON NOW. I’M NOT RACIST EITHER. AND I WON’T EVEN GET TO HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS AN ARTIST. CAUSE 12 NUMBER 1 ALBUMS PUTS HIM IN A CATEGORY FOR JUST HIM AND EMINEM WON’T AND CAN’T SURPASS THAT.

@snake eye, Eminem has had every album go to number 1. He has only released 7 albums. And with those 7 albums he has outsold Jay Z’s 12. so what exactly is your point? As for influence, all the proves is that people dick ride celebrities beyond belief. Eminem doesnt do that shit

    LucaBrasi Reply:

@alex, Seems like your talking about fashion more then rap itself. I didn’t know rap was a color either… How does Jay-z Influence you honestly when you can’t ever even afford to step in a Maybach? How does that influence you. Im sure back in the 90’s you couldn’t afford the throwback jersey’s like that either. Crystal really? Jay-z the first person to drink crystal ever? Shit was out before he was born. Who did he bite that off of.. So every time we say Jay wearing a Italian suit. Did he create that style as well.. You sound dumb and ignorant. If you want to go by statistics Eminem is the best rapper ever. And Rolling stones just labeled him as King of Hip Hop. Like Michael Jackson as King of Pop… Stop being a hater brother… Total Sales Eminem Doubled his number 2 competition. Rap/Hip Hop has no color. All you are sounding like is a racist.. I wouldn’t put Eminem on the best dressed rapper. He wouldn’t even be in my top 100. But he is the best lyricist. Advice for you would be to stop biting off everything Jay does. You will never be able to afford it. I live in the BX and I never seen anyone sippin on Crystal or chillin in a Maybach. So damn sure that don’t have an influence on me.. Stop hating on white people dude. Sounding like Kanye… Nobody wants to hear that shit anymore…

If you listen to his lyrics you will find out how dumb he is! Listen to Eminem- Syllables feat. Jay Z, 50 cent, Dr. Dre and more. It was amazing. I love Kanye and Wayne and Hova but I can’t believe that anyone actually thinks that they are better rappers than Eminem.
Eminems best songs are because of the lyrics and story telling.
Lil Wayne is not even close to the others. I can’t believe anyone even seriously thinks that he is the best current rapper. I love listening to his songs but if you look at lyrics and flow of his raps its nothing compared to Eminem.
Kanye has the best beats/production out of any of them which is why he is very popular, and i like a lot of his lyrics but they aren’t the reason that his music is really good.
Jay-Z is in my opinion the closest to Eminem but listen to the song Renegades and Jay-Z has an amazing first verse. But after you hear Em on the second verse the battle is over. Hes just so good.

This post goes totally useless on a simple fact. Well to me, atleast. I believe that you can’t judge “The Best Rapper” based on his sales charts. The world has gone soft. We all know that. People listen to Gaga, Ke$ha and all other dance stuff that tops the charts and the rap songs that are on a dance type of beat, get high in the charts. Another thing that people have started considering is Fast rap. Everyone’s doing it these days. Infact, people don’t even want to listen to the lyrics. As Eminem said in Syllables, they just care about the Chorus of the song and they want a fancy beat to dance on.

Another thing that I’d like to mention is irrelevance. I may be wrong, but as a music blogger myself, I’ve listened to Lil Wayne a lot of times and I agree that he is really good and got some real dope songs in the game. But, don’t you agree that on most of his songs, all he really talks about is himself and stuff that is totally irrelevant from the theme or the topic of the song. So the thing is, people with wisdom, a sense of humor, know who the Best Rappers in the game are. I won’t point anyone out cause people won’t believe me since we all have gone soft..

i think the “Best Rapper Alive” Title should go to those who are independent Like Tech N9ne for example, if he got the attention back then like eminem and jay z has up till this very day, he’d Easily be in the top 5 in everyone’s List. Mainstream faggots who cant go independent should never ever be titled “best rapper alive” as that is pure bullshit. but go ahead and argue about which mainstream is the best rapper alive but when tech gets the attention he deserves you bet your ass he will be Number 2 atleast.

also, Lil wayne is Great rapper according to Tech n9ne, that comen from the Independent king himself, you know Lil wayne must be great. he might be waiting for the right moment to show his full potential.

And Eminem next album will be Pure Fire. ya know him and his 2.0 boys and paul reading comments about eminem’s yelling and flaws and they want the old eminem back. so have faith in him.

Lil Wayne, yeah all you haters can talk all the shit you would like but this is the true best rapper alive, his Carter series is off the charts, Carter III could be the best rap album ever made, Carter IV was disappointing but still hot, add in that every single song he touches turns to gold and heres your true number 1… every upcoming artist wants Wayne in their song simply bcuz he makes the hits now and has since he came into the rap game… Jay and Em are great no doubt but seriously you cant compare them to Wayne right now, hes on the pedastal and isnt coming down anytime soon…

I just laugh at everyone who said Lil Wayne sucks On Eminem song “Talkin 2 myself” he raps about how Lil Wayne would kill him. Out of every rapper Lil Wayne may not be the best rapper alive to u but he is to me he think about it. Lil Wayne dedicate his life to entertain his fans. Everyday he’s either Performing life or in the studio. Out of all the rappers I respect him the most. He deal with Haters like yall everyday. So what if he skateboards, wear skinny jeans, or talk about pussy, money, & drugs. Its not a crime. He knows yall will talk becux he does thoes things but that why he’s “Real” he doesnt want to change bexuz yall dont like it. I understand if you HATE Wayne becuz he’s overratted, over played, and having fans hop on him. But theres one thing yall should do is respect him for keepin hip-hop alive. And exciting. Me I respect and listen to every rapper Em, Jay, Kanye, and everyone else. But over all Wayne stands out the most to me! Thanks for reading this follow me @YMFan4life93 and tell me what u thought about this. Haters or not i would love to hear what you got to say. Its all music debate :)

@YMFan4life93, Seriously why do lil wayne fans always bring that song talking 2 myself up? I mean it only shows your ignorance and lack of understanding of lyrics. As that song is about the period that eminem suffered from writers block. He was mad at anyone who was hot at that time (lil wayne, kanye west) so he wanted to diss them. But he knew he would lose as he couldn’t even write a decent punchline. So in short if you listen to the lyrics he said the statement: I would have my ass handed to me, because of his inabillity to write, rather then the skill of the other rappers. Don’t get me wrong I know Em respect lil wayne, but he has never claimed that lil wayne is better then him. While lil wayne said, I qoute: I ain’t calling you out to diss me, cause I can’t fuck with you, in an interview referring to Em. So please lil wayne fans if you want to defend your man fine, but atleast know what your talking about.

    Oh My God Reply:

@YMFan4life93, Wayne didn’t save Hip Hop.. Hip Hop was dead til Kendrick Lamar/J. Cole came out. Other artists that are underground are working on making it to the top and they’ll get there in time. Wayne will be forgotten because he won’t have a legacy like Kanye, Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Hov, etc. Lil Wayne is making money off of stupid ass people buying his shit and going to see him perform live. Smh.

Up & Coming Rapper to look out for: Lil B

His real music (No not Wonton Soup) is actually better than most stuff out. If you talk about relating to it than go listen to his I’m Gay album or Angels Exodus. I know people are gonna bash me but this is what I feel at this point. One of the realist dudes out. It’s not his fault he knows how to play the game and make money while doing it.

    Kayne West or Eminem.
    1. Influence on the culture even beyond hip-hop.
    2. Massive hits, every year.
    3. Musical/Lyrical Genius.
    4. Staying relevant.
So to me BEST RAPPER ALIVE is Kanye West because of point 4. To me he’s more relevant than eminem now. eminem changed in a way I personally didn’t like but kanye evolved in a great way.

too many wayne riders here….if someone says oh its eminem oh its hov, dont go and say “NO…ITS WAYNE” nd dipp. prove why and dont say “cuz he sed it, he ma hero!”

    i think its;
    1a hova
    1b eminem

jay done his thing for longer, has more impact on the game, and fits the criteria and gots the numbers. He top 5 ever lyrically

but em has made the game popular, like he took it to the masses (esp [no offense] to the white people). hes also got the numbers, history and ability

i just think Jay is slightly > Em

Hovi Hov … No one has done it more consistent and most of the rappers you speak about won’t be relevant at 42. 12 Number one albums, A shit load of trends made in his reign, Lyrical genius , One of the greatest flows. The closest would be Em , but Recovery was one of the most repetitive albums ever. We understand you’re back , we understand you’re off drugs … Tell me something else. Relapse was terrible and Blueprint 3 for sure out did that album. So of late Hov is for sure slapping Em. Em is one of my favorite rappers of all time , so I’m not just shitting on him.

This checklist is very basic. There is no doubt the person who conjured this up knows hiphop but to be more in depth…
What about lyrical content? Ie: not the same bullshit topics being rapped in every song and albums. Also they should have some form of conscience messages relating to worldly topics and issues in at least one, if not more, songs on an album.
    Innovation throughout their evolution?
not staying the same image and getting boring or staying the same but reinventing with the times
    Live performances?
Communication and diction in interviews about their music and brand?
Features on other musicians songs and those individual performances on the charts with an average.
    +A LOT, LOT MORE

Best Rapper Alive is FABOLOUS he’s current he keeps new music thats hot…. He’s always slept on and overlooked cause he never comes out in says he’s the best out knowing he is. His wordplay is the best in the game hands down!!!!

I can’t say Lil wayne because I remember the old wayne… the Dedication 2, Carter 2, Da Drought 3 Wayne…. I caught a glimpse of this wayne on that No Celings mixtape but the carter 4 was thrash his word play has went way way way down. I don’t even think he cares anymore about the quality music he releases….

Or it could be Jay-Z he the most consistent and his track record is impecable. Everything he releases has been on a consistent level.

theres not enough people in this blog that have the slightest idea what they talkin bout but my consideration would be (in no particular order)
    1.Eminem (we all know why)
2.Lupe Fiasco(a True poet and very consious about worldly issues)
    3.kanye west(more of a producer less a rapper)
4.jay-z(20 year chart topping career, respectable lyricist)
5.Nas(changed the lyric game and is still out there)
6.Tech n9ne (light consideration for tech)
it really comes down to jay-z eminem and Nas they are all veterans and have changed the game

I don’t even understand why people are discussing this,. If you go by the checklist there is only one winner and thats Eminem. He is the most succesfull rapper of all time. If you look skillwise he is still the best rapper alive, with nas second. He already did songs with his main competitors (jay z and wayne) and killed them.

Lil wayne- lyrical bad ass that hype up your mood and has the best metaphores out there and brings out SWAG in his music. Eminem- lyrical genius that really make you think with his music and can completly destroy rapping opponents. i am a fan of both they today are the modern day biggie and tupac.
