The Best Rapper Alive Checklist

September 28, 2011 · Posted in lists · 424 Comments

Too many people choose to throw “The Best Rapper Alive” title on any rapper with a hot song. “The Best Rapper Alive” title is the most coveted title in Hip Hop; it is not to be thrown around. Because music is subjective to ones perspective, we have to find a way to look at it from a neutral perspective. To crown someone the best we’ll need facts. Fans lie, blogs lie, numbers don’t. A rapper must earn “The Best Rapper Alive” title by doing more than rap. “The Best Rapper Alive” shall have at least 3 albums,  must have released an album within the past 2 years, and at least 3 of his/her albums must have also debuted in the Top 10; in addition he/she must have an inarguable influence on the culture.

“The Best Rapper Alive” must have at least 3 albums, not mixtapes, albums! He/she must be battle tested, and a proven winner. Just because your favorite rapper has a hot album does not make him “The Best Rapper Alive.” Blake Griffin had a great rookie season, but would you compare him to LeBron James? Of course not. Sam Bradford also had an amazing rookie season, but no one would ever dare say he’s better than Tom Brady. You get it? No rookie deserves “The Best Rapper Alive” title. He/she must have at least 3 albums to even be mentioned in the conversation.

So your favorite rapper has more than 3 albums, but hasn’t released an album within the past 2 years. Yeah, “The Best Rapper Alive” cannot be lazy. More importantly, he/she must be relevant. Not having an album in 2 years will quickly put you at the bottom of the iTunes library. Today’s generation wants new music every month. Do you want another sports analogy? I swear music and sports are so synonymous. My San Diego-New York fam is going to hate me for this one. You wouldn’t compare LaDainian Tomlison to Chris Johnson or Adrian Peterson. Sure LT is a hall of famer. But he’s nowhere near the level he was at in 2006 when he was with the Chargers, and won the MVP by scoring 28 touchdowns with 1,815 rushing yards. Calling him the best rusher alive would be absurd. “The Best Rapper Alive” must be dropping hot music on a consistent basis. Not having an album within the past two years disqualifies you for “The Best Raper Alive” title.

In addition to putting in work at the studio on a consistent basis, “The Best Rapper Alive” shall get numbers. He/she must sell records, and must have at least 3 albums debut in the Top 10. If your favorite rapper is only selling 5,000 units in his first week, he’s probably not very good. Most of the times, if a rapper has a good album, a top 10 debut is easy to obtain. A track record is important. Therefore, I’m asking that “The Best Rapper Alive”  have at least 3 albums debut in the Top 10. Consistency over time is crucial.

But the most important accomplishment that “The Best Rapper Alive” should have is an inarguable influence over the culture. Those who make history, break norms, break records, and set trends have the right to be considered the best. When I say inarguable influence, I mean inarguable in every sense of the word. So inarguable that it’s practically a fact. If a majority of the people in the culture adapt to the “The Best Rapper Alive’s” fashion, sayings, and rapping style, he or she has an inarguable influence on the culture. I cannot imagine someone considering a rapper the best alive when he/she does not have the slightest influence on the culture.

To understand “The Best Rapper Alive” checklist you have to look at it as a whole. If you look at the list paragraph by paragraph you will end up in the middle of nowhere. Comprehend that to crown somebody the best, you need to support your argument with facts. When someone says that the job market is suffering, you look at the unemployment rate for proof, you do not go ask your friends for an opinion. You look at the facts. And for all the hipsters saying, “Quez I’m never visiting KillerHipHop again, you’re completely ignoring the underground.” Well “The Best Rapper Alive” title was created by the mainstream audience for mainstream rappers. So please click the red box with the X on your top right. Yeah on your mainstream PC. Anyways, as I previously stated, “The Best Rapper Alive” MUST meet all the requirements stated above. He/she must have 3 albums, and must have released an album withing the past two years, at least 3 of his/her albums must have also debuted in the Top 10; in addition he/she must have an inarguable influence on the culture. Next time you see a stan talking reckless in the comments, for the sake of hip hop please refer them to the Best Rapper Alive Checklist.

Do you agree with this checklist? If so, who do you think is the best rapper alive?

I don’t even understand why people are discussing this,. If you go by the checklist there is only one winner and thats Eminem. He is the most succesfull rapper of all time. If you look skillwise he is still the best rapper alive, with nas second. He already did songs with his main competitors (jay z and wayne) and killed them.

to be honest most people that say eminem is the best are white. not trying to offend anybody but this is a true fact. in my eyes lil wayne and eminem are in a tie. Lil wayne- lyrical bad ass that hype up your mood and has the best metaphores out there and brings out SWAG in his music. Eminem- lyrical genius that really make you think with his music and can completly destroy rapping opponents. i am a fan of both they today are the modern day biggie and tupac.

  22. itzdeejayniggah on December 10th, 2011 10:42 am

anyone who would even mention kanye as any best rapper should kill themselves, he’s a producer and a good one but not the best rapper by far real talk

  23. Aviles89 on December 13th, 2011 6:20 pm

By far eminem is the best rapper in the industry, then ill say jay-z cause he’s a legend. Then just based on being a beat mastermind/lyrical genius Kanye west is 3 but is future top artist.

  24. mixtapes on December 24th, 2011 7:18 am

LOL @ all the people saying eminem & lil wayne…the only people saying eminem are white & the people saying lil wayne don’t listen to other music except young money & radio garbage…Jay-Z is the best rapper alive & Nas comes second with Black Thought coming in at third…Jay-Z has skills he’s nice but because of this illuminati rumors now everyone is saying he sucks and he’s gay-z etc. Please he has lyrics, flow & impact & I don’t believe in sales so I won’t include that…the people that say Jay-Z was killed on renegade are either eminem stans, nas stans or they just follow what everyone else says because those Jay-Z verses were just as good as eminems if not better & just because you get killed on a song don’t mean the person that killed you is better than you, did you forget that Nas got killed by Luda on the made you look remix does that make Luda better than Nas? Or how about Royce Da 5’9 killing eminem on almost every song on hell the sequel yet I see no white guy saying Royce is better think about that…people saying Jay-Z steals lines should STFU because Jean Grae back in 2003 was saying “rap is dead” & guess who gave their album a name VERY similar to that hmmm…Jay-Z got skills and he’s lyrically nice you people need to realise that eminem hasn’t made a good album since “the eminem show” & Nas is a bit inconsistent…I’m from South Africa all you here is ymcmb or eminem groupies smh especially among my race(coloureds)…coloured here in South Africa is not a racial slur its a race & more importantly a culture(Cape Coloureds google it)
    1.Jay-Z
    2.Rakim

Lil Wayne is not the best rapper alive. He is good creatively but not lyrically or mentally. It’s a tie between eminem, nas, and jay-z
