1 Verse, 1 Hearse #10, Childish Gambino – Fire Fly

November 17, 2011 · Posted in 1 verse 1 hearse, reviews · 11 Comments

Listening to Camp, I felt like Justin Bieber when he got the paternity lawsuit. Where did this come from? Then I said, “is that Donald Glover from Community? Damn, he can rap.” Gambino has everything too. The depth, wordplay, metaphors, similes, production, and hooks. Just picking a song to hearse was a task. In the end, “Fire Fly” was the hottest in my ears, since I felt that it embodied the entire album rather nice. Yes, summer is long gone, but let’s go on a short camping trip to Gambino’s commercial debut.

Drake – Take Care Album Review

Let’s get this started by saying I had high expectations for this album before I even heard it. The quality of music we were getting from Drake throughout the year led me to believe this was going to be album of the year. “Watch the Throne” set the bar high and then “Cole World: Sideline Story” set it higher though. Drake had some serious work to do, and in my opinion he did it. It wasn’t the over the top, amazing production from WTT or lyrically dominating like Cole’s project, but once again it was extremely relatable.

The haters are going to hate, saying he’s soft, blah blah blah. I’m a fan of all hip hop, and consider it an art. If fucking Picasso painted the same type of shit as Van Gogh then we wouldn’t recognize them as artists individually. So listen to the album and read this review with an open mind.

Now let’s break these tracks down…

Battle For The Throne Comes Down to the 4th Quarter

October 27, 2011 · Posted in reviews · 84 Comments

Man, what a year so far. Somebody lit a match underneath hip hops ass in 2011. We’ve had major releases from some big names in the game and some of the newer faces, and we’re only a third of the way through. Hip hop isn’t Lebron James though. Three quarters isn’t enough. It’s who comes out on top at the end of this highly competitive fourth quarter that we’ll see who REALLY has the throne right now. Let’s break this bitch down to the camps battling for the 2011 throne:  Read more

1 Verse, 1 Hearse #5, J. Cole – Who Dat

J.cole

We’re only weeks away from the release of J. Cole’s debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story, and the J. Cole hate is at an all-time high right now! All over the blogosphere, all I read is people questioning J. Cole’s abilities and debating whether or not Cole World will flop. So I feel obligated to remind you of Cole’s talents. “Who Dat” is undoubtedly one of my  favorite J. Cole songs; Jermaine showcases the ability to hang with the best in the metaphor, simile, analogy, and wordplay game. Who wants to F with Hollywood Cole?

1 Verse, 1 Hearse #4, Kendrick Lamar – H.O.C.

September 4, 2011 · Posted in reviews · 22 Comments

In a time when smoking weed in Hip-Hop is at an all-time high, only one rapper is dope enough to speak out. Kendrick Lamar speaks out against marijuana use in Hip-Hop on his song from Overly Dedicated titled, “H.O.C.”. Marijuana is a proven monetary subject in Hip-Hop. Wiz Khalifa is a perfect example of this.  I always respect a rapper that goes against the crowd. The Killer hearse and I don’t usually go into the past, but I thought the realness in this verse deserved a ride. A lot of you ask for Kendrick anyways, so it is win-win.

1 Verse, 1 Hearse #3, Lil Wayne – It’s Good

Wow. How do I begin to talk about this Lil Wayne verse on It’s Good. To be honest it’s legendary. I’m going to have to bring out the Maybach Bugatti hearse for this one. August 24, 2011 will forever be remembered as the day Lil’ Wayne dissed Jay-Z. I expect a full blown Lil’ Wayne Vs. Jay-Z beef to succeed this.
