Odd Future Kicked Off Show In New Zeland Over Homophobic Lyrics
Los Angeles based rap collective Odd Future has been kicked off the New Zealand Big Day Out Festival. The Wolf Gang was banned after a local activist wrote a letter to festival organizers citing concerns over Odd Future’s homophobic lyrics. Activist Calum Bennachie wrote,
Lyrics such as those played by Odd Future increase the societal discourse against LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender] people, a discourse that encourages bullying and violence. If it is acceptable to say something similar to “gays are a cancer on society that deserves to be eliminated, then what group would be next? By allowing Odd Future to play at BDO, you are proving that you have little concern for the lives and welfare of LGBT people, that you are willing to endanger their lives, and seek to encourage stigmatisation against them. I find this disappointing in an organisation that could do so much to enhance the self esteem of youth, reduce stigma, and discourage violence.

And I’m pretty sure Eminem wasn’t kicked off stage once during his entire career and MMLP was filled with homophobic content………..so maybe Odd Future was also kicked off stage because they’re just flat out terrible

So what? These guys all suck.. Only one that is even decent is Earl. Too bad he is locked out in some island because his mom doesn’t like the lyrics he says… I salute that mom.

Salute that mom too. They don’t got good message for kids or young people, talking about cocaine or killing gays… They got a responsibility on our society

music is therapy. listen to whatever you feel. i think some of their music is pretty tight, it’s not all about “killing gays and cocaine”.
as for this, it was bound to happen.. ignorant people being “offended” by something they don’t have to listen to.

They are on the same level as Lil B, Soulja, Waka, Gucci, etc… Whoever listens to them is stupid. Ignorant people above me saying its music… Stupid ass people lmao. It’s a damn Fact that these guys don’t make music -.-‘

I only have one thing to say, I’m glad I live in the United States and no place elsewhere… Bottom line: Freedom of Speech

It’s not ignorant people getting offended they are worried about, it’s the effects on the listeners they want to avoid. Freedom of speech isn’t freedom of speech in U.S. literally if enough people felt that the lyrics endangered a group it’d be banned here, so that’s my 2 cents

I promise that most New Zealanders are quiet and don’t complain unless absolutely necessary. Clearly the guy that complained has only heard about OF and doesn’t like the idea of them, as true homophobes would never even consider having a lesbian in their group
