CNN Names Nas the “Greatest Lyricist of All Time.”

January 9, 2013 · Posted in editorial, news · 18 Comments

CNN has announced Nas as “the greatest lyricist of all time.”
Eliott C. McLaughlin of CNN says, “The words were carefully chosen. “‘Lyricist” over “rapper” or “hip-hop artist;” “greatest” instead of “most successful;” “all time” rather than “today.”
The article places the 40 year old rapper up against other artists such as Jay Z, Eminem, Andre 3000, along with the late Pac and Biggie.

What do you think? Is Nas really the greatest lyricist of all time? If not, who would you say is more deserving of the crown, and why?

I don’t necessarily agree, but I’m fine with it. I would have been fine with any of the rappers they listed in the article. Jay, Big, Pac, Nas, Em, Andre 3000 are all worthy of consideration for greatest lyricist. I’d also add Rakim to that conversation.

I’d have to go Eminem from a lyrical standpoint, however I can understand an argument with anybody else named.

Yeah I mean Nas certainly deserves that title. And they did word it carefully. . . ‘lyricist’. . Not artist. In the artist department people might consider Eminem or Hov over him.

This is a huge conversation. Theres no one right answer.

Rakim is the greatest lyricist of all time & I would still put Em over Nas as well, but he definitely deserves this attention

Can’t really be mad at the selection, nor the list. I mean Nasir has always been a genius on the mic. He makes imagery come to life out of mere words. The thug poet

They chose Nas because Zack De La Rocha was already declared a lyrical god.
