GQ: Where were you when Tim Tebow nearly broke Twitter with that overtime pass last Sunday night?
Eminem: I was in my living room, watching, and I really wanted Pittsburgh to win. The Steelers are one of my favorite teams. It’s all good, though. Tebow’s doing some really incredible shit right now. He does certain things that other guys just can’t do. The critics are always talking about his mechanics and shit like that, comparing it to the standard of what a quarterback should be, but he’s defying them. Every week, he seems to defy them.

Just wanted to start by saying I hope you all enjoyed this holiday season and wish you the best of luck going into the new year. I realize I didn’t post numbers 4 and 3 last week. Well, working 11 hour shifts at a mall during the holiday season 7 days a week leaves you little time or inspiration to sit behind a computer. So my apologies for that. Let’s finish off this list and give credit to some honorable mentions.

4A. Hell: The Sequel – Bad Meets Evil

I decided to split up number 4 into two parts. The first part of Number 4 is simply because of the fact that this is technically an EP. It’s not a mixtape though so I had to put it in my Top 10 albums of the year. The EP lived up to my expectations. The chemistry between Em and Royce makes it seem like the beef they had never happened. The way they change verses and lines back and forth with such ease is fantastic. They do a great job at painting the picture and each contributing to the story of the song. Although they both held their own, I feel as if Royce came for people’s necks now that he was finally put into the limelight. Glad to see that everything came full circle and these guys continued what they both started together.

Favorite Track: Above The Law – Love the energy in this track. Eminem just spits with absolute fury and precision. Royce outshines him lyrically in this song though. Both just burying this track. Love it.

4B. Section .80 – Kendrick Lamar

Not only did I learn about this album back when I first started blogging for KHH, but I was also informed that it is indeed an album, NOT a mixtape. Shout out to you guys for that one. Regardless, this was making my top 5. The production will not wow you, but Kendrick’s delivery and message behind each song will. An intelligent human being that has talent to use his powerful words in poetic form and then rap them with such ease. That’s K Dot in a nutshell. He has the power to single-handedly change the outlook of Compton rappers. While Game gets angrier, Kendrick is getting bigger.

Favorite Track: Poe Man’s Dreams: This is that song that you listen to when you’re buzzin, chillin with your boys, and zone in on every lyric. The beat is set up for that EXACT moment, and the words too.

3. Watch the Throne – Kanye West & Jay-Z

I just think that it’s extremely cool that two huge names in hip hop said they were going to do something that seemed like a fantasy, and then did it. And we didn’t even have to wait forever for it. Or still waiting for it (“cough” Detox “cough.”) I was very impressed and they gave us exactly what we should have expected. Sorry if it wasn’t Kanye of ’04 or Jay of ’96. Up-tempo, braggadocious, sophisticatedly ignorant, top-notch production, limited features, great chemistry. I seen N**gas in Paris 6 times in a row in Boston and if you can make a track that will make me wild out after SIX times in a row, you did your job.

Favorite Track: Gotta Have It – Shortest song on the album, but it is just too swagged out to not love. Both of them extremely on point, and Jigga with double entendre’s for days.  Banger approved also.

2. Cole World: Sideline Story – J. Cole

It was just two years ago that I saw this kid from Fayetteville, North Carolina perform 3 songs as an opening act for Jay-Z. He’s come a long way. Certified radio hits in “Mr. Nice Watch” and “Work Out” as well as party bangers. Nas-esque story telling abilities. Did a great job on doing his own hooks and production on the album as well. You would never be able to tell that this was a debut album.

Favorite Track: Lost Ones – The deepest song on the album. It’s our generation’s “Brenda’s Got a Baby” and Cole does a great job playing both roles of the man and woman in the situation. A+ work on the story telling.Take Care – Drake

1. Take Care- Drake

If you read my review of this album, you will see why I have it at number one.  As much as I enjoy songs that put me on my feet, or let me zone out, I enjoy ones that I can feel more. There was a lot of lyrics on this album that I related to directly. Speaking on emotions, and past experiences. I can play the album right through without skipping a song. A good mixture of singing and rapping on here, which is Drizzy’s killer combo that can’t be reenacted by anybody else in the game right now. The only disappointment for me on this album was the pushed back release date. Other than that, it got my album of the year.

Favorite Track: Lord Knows – Reminds me of “Light Up” from his debut album. Just spitting bars with no hook. A cameo from the boss Richard Ross is always a plus in my book also.

Overall, a great year for hip hop. Great music from a lot of the new faces, and the veterans in the game. Let’s toast to 2012 being another great year for music, and life in general. And to seeing 2013, ha!

Everyone is addicted to something. Whether you admit it or not, there is something in your life that you choose to use, do, or watch at an excessive amount. This could be good or bad obviously depending on what it is. For example, if you’re addicted to sunflower seeds then it’s obviously much better than being addicted to cigarettes. I know, thank you captain obvious. I say that to say this: I am addicted to concerts.

It’s the ultimate rush for a huge music fan. I recently went to the “Watch the Throne” tour in Boston and I went through my usual routine before a concert. It’s that feeling of excitement, but at the same time it still doesn’t hit you. You go through the months, weeks, and days to the concert knowing that you’re going, but it’s still not FULLY hitting you. When people ask you if you’re going, you say “yes” with excitement (and in a sort of braggadocious manner) but still don’t have that rush of excitement.

Now, I’ve been to numerous concerts in the last three years. I’ve pretty much seen anybody that I would want to see. I’ve rapped with Crooked I, was part of history at Yankee Stadium with Jay-Z and Eminem, and was at Lil Wayne’s first show on tour after getting out of prison. That was all in this past year. I’ve been front row for Drake, Nicki, Luda, Banks, and Slaughterhouse. I got to see Dr. Dre perform last year in Yankee Stadium and I’ve seen Jay-Z six times. With all the money I’ve spent on those tickets, I felt as if that paragraph was necessary. Sorry for being that guy.

It’s the day of the concert. You wake up and the first thing on your mind is what you will be doing tonight. The experience you will have and all the possible scenarios of what the show may be. Whether you have class, work, or even just the day off, you’re still thinking about that show. But once again, still no butterflies in the stomach, chill down your spine, but you’re starting to fiend for it a little bit more. Hours seem like days, minutes like hours, but it still hasn’t hit you. What will it take to give you that rush that you are expecting? Well isn’t it obvious what the answer to this question is?

You’re on the road, heading to the venue. The whole ride you’re playing you’re favorite album by that artist. Rapping or singing every lyric and building up the excitement for the night. It starts to hit you a little bit. At one point the music gets turned down and everyone starts giving their opinion on what songs will be performed. Will there be any special guests? What song will they come out to? How long will they perform for? Questions flying around, predictions being made, and that excitement starting to build up even more.

You get to the venue and park. I call this part of the night the “longest chain lift in the world.” I call it that because it’s like you’re on a roller coaster. Sitting in your seats waiting for the show to start is like the way up before the big drop on a coaster. You start getting a little anxious. You’re legs don’t stop moving and you run every time you go to the bathroom or buy drinks just in case the show starts while you’re gone. Conversation at this point is very minimal. You just wait.

All of a sudden the lights go out. You’re stomach drops and you fly out of your seat. It’s show time. The intro starts and so does the screaming, the singing, the rapping in unison amongst all the fans. It FINALLY hits you. You’re heart is pounding and if you’re like me then you are jumping with your hands up yelling every lyric you know. All of a sudden the strangers around you become friends. Dapping everyone up for no reason. To witness some of your favorite songs by one of your favorite artists being performed live is a whole different level of excitement and awe. Even in seeing Jay six times, the rush never gets old.

There’s just something about being a part of the crowd. It’s like when the Power Rangers would go from individuals to form a Megazord. I know, I’m a geek. What I’m saying is, everyone in the crowd comes together to form one voice. Sometimes I just look around in the crowd and see that I’m not alone. Everyone in there is feeling the same level of euphoria that I am. I say all of that to say this: Concerts, you are my drug.

I always grade a show on how bad my voice is at the end. If I have no voice, then it was a 10. That means I was screaming the lyrics to every song and I was satisfied with the set. That happens most of the time. I felt like I wanted to share this with you guys, because I know there are many of you out there that are like me. Eminem, what advice do you offer, if any, on being scrutinized for being a white rapper. Do you guys ever talk about race in that way?
Eminem: We make jokes about it, but I don’t think we talk about it in depth. As I was listening to his music, I am not even thinking about any of that shit. It’s just the music. That’s one of the things that’s great about it. I’m not even thinking about it when I hear the music.

Yelawolf: We do poke fun of it because it’s funny. Like, he calls me White Dog.

Oh, you called him that on the BET Awards Cypher. I didn’t realize it was an ongoing joke?
EM: Yeah, or Beige Sheep. [Laughs]
YW: Cracker Nuts. Whatever, I think it’s kinda unspoken.
EM: We deal with it enough as it is. So now, let’s make music.
YW: Let’s make great records. At the end of the day, that’s all there is to do.
