Light Up Lyrics: Drake ft Jay-Z

[Verse 1: Drake]
Ive been up for 4 days
Getting money both ways
Dirty and clean, I could use a glass of cold spades
Rolexes, chauffeurs, and low fades
I keep thinking how young can you die from old age
The always tell me no one is working as hard as you
And even though I laugh it off man its probably true
Cuz while all of my closest friends out partying
Im just here making all the music that they party too
But party on, party on, all night n-gga
I got these new rappers nervous prom night n-gga
I grow tired of these f-cking grown man liars
Story tellers, they aint even need a camp fire
Uhh, but I just wanna tell the truth
Before one of these haters load a couple shells and shoot
This sh-t feel like when fredro star was a sunset park stunting hard in his yellow goose
Ya, and ima motherf-cking missed target
But a target none the less, and I just started
Was that directed at Moi?
Cant be, they must be talking to themselves Hov, hands free
Yeah, and im just filling up this daily planner
Getting busy cuz im a star, no spangled banner
Jealous dudes get to talking in their music
And I just say I wrote it for yo girlfriends Kelsey Grammar
Yah, that’s what life becomes when you doing you
Welcome to Hollywood don’t let this town ruin you
And if you pillow talking with the women that are screwing you
Just know that she gon tell another n-gga when she through with you
Don’t get impatient when it takes to long
And drink it all even when it taste too strong yeah
I gotta feel alive, even if it kills me
Promise to always give you me, the real me

[Chorus]
Who would have thought
I’d be caught in this life?
Let’s celebrate with a toast
And get lost in tonight
And make it all light up
(Hey, Guru, tell hom’ to go to open that Ace right there),
Wait until the sun goes down
We gon’ make this bitch light up
Even when the sun goes down
I’m gon’ make this go

[Verse 2: Jay-Z]
OWWWWWWW, Hov turning heads like OWELSSSSS
Im the man of the hour
Triple entendre don’t even ask me how
Con-Edison Flo I’m connected to a high power
Bright lights will make your whole city light up
A trillion watt light bulb when im in the night club
I just landed in that G-450, caught the mayweather fight cuz his satellite was crispy
Uhh, yall can miss me with the money talk
The smart moneys on Hov, f-ck what the dummys talk
I don’t do to much blogging, I just run the town, I don’t do to much jogging
I aint gotta scar yet, you f-cking round with me and my dogs is far fetched
Drake, heres how they gon come at you
With silly rap feuds trying to distract you
In disguise in the form of a favor
The Barzini meeting, watch for the traitors
Uhh, and ive seen it all done it all
That’s why none of these dum dums could done him off
The summers ours, the winter too
Top down in the winter, that’s what winners do
And to these n-ggas im like windows 7
You let em tell it they swear that they invented you
lyrics courtesy of www.killerhiphop.com
And since no good deed go unpunished
Im not as cool with n-ggas as I once was
I once was, cool as the fonz was,
but these bright lights turned me to a monster
Sorry mama im promised they wouldn’t change me,
but I woulda went insane, had i remain the same ME
F-ck nggas, bitches too
All I got is this money, this will do

[Chorus]
[End]

    A) Dirty and clean must mean he is making money legally and illegally. Cold Spades refers to Jay-Z’s champagne “Ace of Spades”. Ace is also referenced in the chorus.

    b) G-450 refers to the Gulfstrem Business Jet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulfstream_G450). He must have watched the boxing on the flight via Satellite. Jay ballin’ as usual. :)

“just landed in that G-450, caught the mayweather fight cuz the satellite was crispy”

Jay-Z is talking about the satellite TV system on the Gulfstream 450 business jet.

The Gulfstream 450 (G-450) is the newer version of the popular G-IV private jet. Ultra long-range jets like the G-450/G-550 & Global Express have satellite TV, and LAN & Wifi internet options for the cabin.

These guys are really describing the millionaire lifestyle…the lyrical content within this song is exciting.

    “Fredro Star….yellow goose…” 1/2 of ya’ll don’t even get that.

Drake is truly talented. I appreciate his work ethic!!!

Jay-Z… this song is hot im not gonna front.. but yo hes just initiating Drake thats why is called Light Up

Light Up… with a very dark twisted feeling. Where Jay-Z comes and raps about how the haters are gonna get at you. Feeding lies to Drake.. hosting Drake, giving Drake more than what Wayne can. Making the song Light Up meaning lighting Drake up.. as he says “i gotta feel the life Who would have thought I’d be caught in this life? Let’s celebrate with a toast And get lost in tonight And make it all light up” and Jay says “(Hey, Guru, tell hom’ to go to open that Ace right there)” and Drake replies with “Wait until the sun goes down We gon’ make this bitch light up Even when the sun goes down I’m gon’ make this go”. Then Jay-Z replies in his verse “OWWWWWWW, Hov turning heads like OWELSSSSS Im the man of the hour (Owels Evil animal symbol, turn heads exorcism) Con-Edison Flo I’m connected to a high power (higher entity lucifer?) Bright lights will make your whole city light up. I don’t do to much blogging, I just run the town, I don’t do to much jogging I aint gotta scar yet, you f-cking round with me and my dogs is far fetched (Runs the world, he isnt scarred yet)
Drake, heres how they gon come at you — He tells Drake hes how its going to happen
With silly rap feuds trying to distract you — Distracting you with sales, dissing you
In disguise in the form of a favor — Buisness Sales Men… deals
The Barzini meeting, watch for the traitors — Your going to meetings get famous, watch the traitors.
Uhh, and ive seen it all done it all — I Lucifer (Jay-Z) I done both betrayed and been betrayed to rise to where i am now
That’s why none of these dum dums could done him off — Thats why Im not being stopped.
The summers ours, the winter too — Everything is ours
Top down in the winter, that’s what winners do — Below hell where its cold, thats what winners do
And to these n-ggas im like windows 7 — and to the people im a “creation” (not believeable)
You let em tell it they swear that they invented you — The people think they invented you
And since no good deed go unpunished — Since i made a deal with the devil, now im being punished
Im not as cool with n-ggas as I once was — My punishment is.. no friends, no loved ones.
I once was, cool as the fonz was, — I was cool once like the Fonz
but these bright lights turned me to a monster — The fame Jay wanted more power more fame.
Sorry mama im promised they wouldn’t change me, — Apologizing to his mother promising this deal wouldnt change him
but I woulda went insane, had i remain the same ME — But if he didnt accept the deal Jay would of gone crazy, thinking is it really him or him undercontrol?
F-ck nggas, bitches too — fuck the human race / male/female
All I got is this money, this will do — Jay got all the money for his power

    [Reply]

    Don Viciano Reply:

Hey Dro I say I follow you, but if you ever seen The Godfather Part I, The original Don, Marlon Brando tells his son Al Pacino how his enemies would come at him. So you have to interpret that part as a whole starting from, “Drake, here’s how they… all the way to watch for the traitors. And Barzini was one of the enemy Dons.

    [Reply]

    Reec Reply:

    @Dro,

Why does everyone seem to think this man is the devil, has sold his soul to the devil or is some sort of Satanist. I agree with most of his breaking down of the song cuz hes got most of it right but 1; the interpretation of the “Oww, Owls, & hours to higher power” triple entendre is a lil off to me, but honestly Ive only come up with 2 meanings anyway.

meaning 1: Owl… seriously the first meaning is obvious, Owls turn their heads all hous of the night to find and sweep their prey in the owls beak… oww. lol
meaning 2: Time… a little more thought goes into this. Analog clocks/watches have face that hands turn to show the time. Jay-Z being a man of his stature, One of the Greatest rappers of all time, rapper turned mogul he is no ordinary man. Anywhere he is hes the light of the party, the main event or… the man of the hour. Rap culture has always put high value on bling bling, so naturally being at the forefront of such a culture means he must have something to show his status in in it, like oh… idk… say a custom made Audemar(stupidly overpriced diamond watch brand name). So when he walks into a nightclub, people turn their heads(like owls) in his direction because of who he is(man of the hour), hurting their eyes(owww) once they catch the light reflection off of his fly ass watch.

“Con-Edison flow Im connected to a higher power”
This line referring to him being a Satanist is absurd to me. Con-Edison is an energy company, flowing electricity throughout New York. Jay-Z met with a Warren Buffet and Steve Forbes in September. Warren Buffet is the 2nd richest man in the world. In March he met with President Barack Obama. CLEARLY he has gotten to the point wehere he is connected to higher powers in America.

“The Barzini meeting, watch for the traitors”
Anyone who has seen The Godfather and saw how Don Barzini tried to betray the Corleone’s would get this line. He was a traitor despite marrying into their family. Simple as that.

“I done seen it all, dont it all”
Just take out the Lucifer part and thats it… exactly as it sounds.

“Top down in the winter, thats what winners do”
Every rich person in the history of wealth flys to Miami, Hawaii, The Carribeans or any other “exotic” place during the winter time for one reason: warm weather. Below hell? Whats below Hell? Dont worry I’ll wait… Yeah exactly.

“And to these niggas Im like Windows &, you let them tell it they swear they invented you”
Just another shot at Damon Dash, much like the opening to Lost Ones “I heard muhfuckas saying they made Hov. Made? Hov say ‘Ok so make another Hov.’ ” So unbelievable he’s a creation? Seriously dude? Come on son… come on.

“And since no good deed goes unpunished, Im not as cool with niggas as I once was”
Damon Dash is just the publicly known one, he isnt the only person who tried to get something out of Jay. Jay is a powerful individual (as I already stated) and people have a tendency to stick around hoping they’re gonna get something out of it. With people acting like he owed them something after riding on his talent he had to start cutting people off. This happens to everyone who tries to take care of their own business, Theyre not as cool with the people they came up with because they have their own goals, people tend to try to bring you down.

“These bright lights turned me to a monster”
Fame changes everyone, period. You reach a certain level of prestige a lot more than your address changes… You cant stay the same peson simply because your status makes up a lot of who you are. Change your status and you become a different person. the shit aint rocket science.

“Sorry mama I promised they wouldnt change me but I wouldve went insane had I remained the same me”
Do I really have to explain this line? Just reread the explaination of the last line & apply it to his promise to his mother. If u still dont get it ur a lost cause.

    “Fuck niggas, bitches too
All I got is this money, this’ll do”
with him not having many close ties life and living at the top(a VERY lonely place), hes a isolated individual. So instead of crying about it, he saying “fuck it, I dont need them, I still got money, and thats all I need.” The same thing Lil Wayne meant in the line “I dont need no help, I dont need no homie, I dont need no buddy, nigga I got money, nigga I got heart to go along with the guns, Call me Wheezy F. Baby, I’ll be by myself when I come”

yo im serious u guys that dont belive this plz believe it its real… the could be a spiritual war right now and since we as humans cant see angels or demons.. this battle is being fought through music to see those who are evil and those who are good.. Listen to Eminem Cindarella Man. Recovery, why? eminem is tryna get out of that shit… Lil Wayne Rebirth? trying to get out of it thats why he got the tattoos Fear God / with the C on his forehead with a cross could it be Carter? or could it be Modern day jesus “C”hrist. Wayne / Jay-Z the 2 biggest out there Jesus/Lucifer… why is jay z always looking dark and evil while wayne had the big dreadlocks “long hair” like jesus, without a beared maybe its a coincedence.. Wayne is sent to jail for a stupid reason just how Jesus was tortured for stupid reasons.

if both eminem or lil wayne end up dead.. then we should know why they are fighting against it… just like Tupac “killuminati” and tupac always spoke the truth no matta wat.. just think about it.. this song is actually telling u something else… and i was HIGH AS FUCK wen i realized this… “waiting till the sun goes down” – Drake has been initiatred becuz wayne is in jail and now hes free to jay z’s hands

He said, “I dont do to much Blogging, I just run the town I don’t do too much JARGON” Meaning, he doesn’t use the lingo of a blogger. But it’s a Double Entendre, because he makes it sound like “JOGGING”

Also, I don’t think his Triple entendre was true because he said three different things but a triple entendre is on phrase with three different meanings. I could be wrong, if so let me know.

    [Reply]

  42. ben delorean on July 19th, 2010 10:47 pm

the supposed triple entendre is the “owwww” “owwwllls” “hour” climax, it doesn’t necessarily have to have the same orthographic form…in linguistics this is called a homophone…but this isn’t one. it hase to be at least a whole phrase. thus it could be a double entendre if you take the “hov turning heads like owls” or the “hoes turning heads like owwww” but i doubt that jay-z would recognize a double entendre if it was served on a silver platter. the only double entendre he dropped was that jeezy parallelism with kobe, lebron, wade and their jersey numbers…

    [Reply]

@ben delorean, A triple entendre is a phrase that has three different meanings, usually the other messages are sublimanal. When he says ” Triple entendre don’t even ask me how Con-Edison Flo I’m connected to a high power”.(1) Con Edison is the electronic company in New York.(2) He may also mean that his flow (the way he raps) is coming from a higher power. Since he doesn’t write he may be saying that his lyrics are connected with a higher power as in he’s rapping from the “power” from God or the devil (whichever one he worships).(3) And I believe its also a subliminal message about being connected to a higher power (God/Devil or illuminati ?).. I’m a big music/Jay-Z fan, but I question his intent when he says “Don’t even ask me how” as if he’s insinuating something of that nature. But that’s just my interpretation of what he might mean. Jay-Z is a very intelligent lyricist and he definitely doesn’t say things in his raps on accident or for no reason.
