Jay-Z ft Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind Lyrics

[Jay-Z]
Yeah,
Yeah, Imma up at Brooklyn,
now Im down in Tribeca,
right next to DeNiro,
But i’ll be hood forever,
I’m the new Sinatra,
and since i made it here,
i can make it anywhere,
yeah they love me everywhere,
i used to cop in Harlem,
all of my dominicanos
right there up on broadway,
brought me back to that McDonalds,
lyrics courtesy of killerhiphop.com
took it to my stash spot,
5-60 State street,
catch me in the kitchen like a Simmons whipping Pastry,
cruising down 8th street,
off white lexus,
driving so slow but BK is from Texas,
me I’m up at Bed Stuy,
home of that boy Biggie,
now i live on billboard,
and i brought my boys with me,
say wat up to Ty Ty, still sipping Mai-tai
sitting courtside Knicks and Nets give me high fives,
N-gga i be Spiked out, i can trip a referee,
tell by my attitude that I most definitely from…

[Alicia Keys]
In New York,
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,
Theres nothing you can’t do,
Now you’re in New York,
these streets will make you feel brand new,
Big lights will inspire you,
lets hear it for New York, New York, New York

[Jay-Z]
I made you hot n-gga,
Catch me at the X with OG at a Yankee game,
sh-t i made the yankee hat more famous than a yankee can,
you should know I bleed Blue, but I aint a crip tho,
but i got a gang of n-ggas walking with my clique though,
welcome to the melting pot,
corners where we selling rocks,
afrika bambaataa sh-t,
home of the hip hop,
yellow cab, gypsy cab, dollar cab, holla back,
for foreigners it aint fair they act like they forgot how to add,
8 million stories out there and their naked,
lyrics courtesy of killerhiphop.com
cities is a pity half of y’all won’t make it,
me i gotta plug Special Ed and i got it made,
If Jeezy’s payin LeBron, I’m paying Dwayne Wade,
3 dice cee-lo
3 card Monte,
labor day parade, rest in peace Bob Marley,
Statue of Liberty, long live the World trade,
long live the king yo,
I’m from the empire state thats…

[Chorus]

Welcome to the bright light..

[Jay-Z]
Lights is blinding,
girls need blinders
so they can step out of bounds quick,
the side lines is blind with casualties,
who sipping life casually, then gradually become worse,
don’t bite the apple Eve,
caught up in the in crowd,
now your in-style,
and in the winter gets cold en vogue with your skin out,
the city of sin is a pity on a whim,
good girls gone bad, the cities filled with them,
Mami took a bus trip and now she got her bust out,
everybody ride her, just like a bus route,
Hail Mary to the city your a Virgin,
and Jesus can’t save you life starts when the church ends,
lyrics courtesy of killerhiphop.com
came here for school, graduated to the high life,
ball players, rap stars, addicted to the limelight,
MDMA got you feeling like a champion,
the city never sleeps better slip you a Ambien

[Chorus]

[Alicia Keys]
One hand in the air for the big city,
Street lights, big dreams all looking pretty,
no place in the World that can compare,
Put your lighters in the air, everybody say yeaaahh
come on, come,
yeah,
[Chorus]

    found few more

and Jesus can’t save you like starts when the church ends,

Should be: LIFE starts when the church ends

…… casually, then gradually become worse,

SHOULD BE: Who sip the life casually, then gradually become worse,

and it should also be… : a pity on the whim (or something)

(not: the city of sin is a pity of win,)

thanks again on the lyrics though :)

What does Jay-Z mean by, “Hail Mary to the city your a Virgin, and Jesus can’t save you life starts when the church ends”?

    [Reply]

    Anonymous Reply:

@thirty2stripes, It sounds like he is against Jesus Christ that what it sounds like. All you guys are on Jay-Z like he’s Jesus and he’s clearly speaking against Jesus. What does that tell you about him? Is he someone you should be listening to? Jay-Z surely cannot save you and he does not have a heaven or hell to put you in. Be careful what you listen to because anyone who speaks like that about our Lord and Savior is surely on Satan’s side…do you really want to follow Satan. You better start reading that Bible and gaining some understanding instead of trying to learn Jay-Z’s lyrics.

“5-60 STATE street.” (in brooklyn, ny)

    “sippin’ on Mai-Tai” ( a tropical cocktail)

    “Bed STUY” neighborhood in brooklyn

“Spiked out” like Spike Lee at the Knicks game.

“Mami” instead of Mommy like when Dominicans call a girl Mami and the opposite being Papi like Big Papi

“Limelight” may be a reference to the club Limelight that was in an old church in Chelsea.

“3 card Monte” a street game that hustlers play to steal your money.

“Simmons” meaning the daughters of Rev. Run Simmons, they have their own line of shoes called Pastry.

Besides that you did a great job. I know if you’re not from Brooklyn or NY that it’s hard to get some of the references, but that’s what makes it a great song. Feels like it’s made for the us who live or are from Brooklyn or NY.

Chorus should be: “In New York, Concrete jungle…” and the last line from the chorus should be: “lets HEAR it for New York…” instead of “lets here it for New York…”

And I think “…but i got a gang of n-ggas walking with my click though…” should be: “…walking with my clique…”

hey, anyone know what jay meant by “but bk is from tx”??? who’s/what’s bk? im from tx and thought he meant “bee caves from tx”, a high class rich area of austin, so i was stoked until i read the lyrics. i knew he had to mean “sippin on mai tai” cuz thats my name. wth is “malta” like many sites say in the lyrics anyway (not malt liquor)?!

silly but i was confused when he said “driving so slow” especially thinkin he meant bee caves cuz ive lived in many places and tx seems to have the highest speed limit (70mph in most highways in austin)!

someone educate me on these references…

Just about every lyric site has missed this one:

“and in the winter gets cold en vogue with your skin out”

    Should be:

“Anna the Wintour gets cold, in “Vouge” with your skin out”

Anna Wintour is the editor in chief of Vouge magazine…..Hov is just that sick with the wordplay!!

Honestly speaking I can’t even say that what you have is wrong, just wanted to point out the double entendre

Oh, and to those offended by:

“Jesus can’t save you life starts when the church ends”

We are all familiar with those who sin Mon-Sat then go to church on Sunday to pray for forgiveness. This line (IMO) is saying that you live your LIFE once you leave those church doors, so don’t think for a second that God isn’t watching you throughout the rest of the week. God knows that you feel you can do whatever you want Mon-Sat because you think Jesus will save you on Sunday and that’s just not how it works.

Jay Z stole this, as usual, from LL Cool J, he can’t come up with his own ideas and is so uninspired that he’s constantly stealing shit!!

LL Put out “New York New York” where he called NY rappers out and in the background is an “old blue eyes” New York New York, it was on point!!

Jay Z took that idea and broke it into two songs “death of the auto-tune and “Empire State of Mind”. Keys is a good singer, but she can’t replace the original!!

    JAY Z

Why don’t you stop stealing other dudes shit, or just get the F out of the game!!!!

  63. Niki on January 6th, 2010 4:01 am

Thanks for breaking down the lyrics. I was actually liking the song nice beat, until I heard him say something about Jesus and then I was like hold on now. So I had to find the lyrics to see exactly what he said. So now I am going to have to delete it from my iPod and throw away the CD. Sorry J and Keyes but Jesus can and will always SAVE. Life started prior to the church end, church will never end.

when jay z says “Jesus can’t save you life starts when church ends” hes talking about girls who go to church then 5 minutes after go smoke some pot or bang some guys and stuff like that hes sayin that jesus just cant save those poeple.
and im pretty sure its “for foreigners who ain’t fifty they act like the forgot how to act”? it seems like that would make more sense :)

hm..it kinda seems like he’s saying ‘Jesus can’t save you, life starts when church ends’ and he means ‘Jesus can’t save you, life is hard and after church, with all the pretty words, it’s all just sh*t’ I don’t agree. BUT in the video he makes the sign of the cross over himself…
Can someone explain? Does he mean this as a posotive or negative reference to Jesus? Thank you :)

Actually, i’m pretty sure he says:

“for foreigners it ain’t fair, they act like they forgot how to add”

as in the cabbies try to rip off foreigners who wouldn’t know the actual costs of the cabs, short routes, etc.

Well I heard that Jay Z as well as some other celebrities are Luciferians. He worships Lucifer so I’m not suprised that he would say Jesus can’t save you, life starts when the church ends. Check it on Youtube, you’ll see lots of proof that he’s a Luciferian. I like the song but that one line offended me and made me lose respect for Jay.

Jay Z, seems to be a very brilliant young man. And I hope and pray that he knows that the GOD that I serve. Created both me and him. And his son Jesus Christ of Nazerath is the Saviour of this world. The church will stand until the end of time because it is the body of CHRIST. Shame on Jay Z. If he means what he said in his lyrics”Hail Mary to the city your a Virgin, and Jesus can’t save you life starts when the church ends”. I don’t know if he is a Luciferian or not. But, he better recognize that he is living today because of a GOD whose son JESUS CHRIST loves him very much!!! As our mother’s and father’s use to say………GOD is saying, boy, I brought you into this world and I can take you OUT!!!!!
